Founded in 1826, University College London (UCL) is England’s third oldest university. Ever since that time the Bloomsbury campus in the north of London’s inner city has been repeatedly adapted and extended. The restructuring programme currently being implemented at a cost of around 1.2 billion British pounds involves the erection of a new lecture hall building and a student centre, along with the renovation of a number of faculty buildings and of the university’s own Bloomsbury Theatre.
Located in the courtyard behind the listed Wilkins Building, which is UCL’s main building, Wilkins Terrace is a strategic core element of these measures. Under the direction of Levitt Bernstein, a courtyard previously filled with containers and rubble skips has been transformed into a recreation area that is now accessible to the public.
