No sooner is the extension to the Historical Museum in Frankfurt finished, than it is difficult to recall its predecessor, which stood here for 39 years. That’s how it is with the memory of a city. Only a short distance away, on the Römerberg, 15 new structures in medieval look are going up; all the more important, then, that the new museum should set a sign for a more refined approach to the past.

Involved here was not the reinstatement of the city to a pre-war ideal, but the elaboration of the present-day fabric. The Historical Museum is a fine example of this anyway. Standing on the banks of the River Main, it forms part of a conglomerate of five building elements dating from eight centuries of construction. (Florian Heilmeyer)
