Even in a car-loving country like the USA, considerable investments are being made in places to improve public transportation. One example is the small town of Princeton southwest of New York, where a new train station was opened three-and-a-half years ago. The station is situated at the southern edge of the famous university campus, in an area that was once a mixed environment of parking lots, university labs and faculty buildings. While planning the station, Princeton University also considered the creation of a more prominant gateway to the southern end of its campus.
In 2008, Steven Holl Architects and Bnim Architects were awarded the planning contract for a new arts centre at the site, named after Princeton alumnus Peter B. Lewis. The complex includes exhibition spaces for the university’s visual art programme, rehearsal and recording rooms for musicians, two performance halls for dance and theatre as well as two smaller dance studios.
