A new residential district of timber houses organised in rows has been created close to the historic centre of Garmisch. A large hotel complex was originally planned for this site, but a specially founded association objected to the investors’ plans and called for the preservation of  a number of typical old houses and the erection of a new, small-structured housing development for young families. A sustainable, timber-based construction system was stipulated from the very start.

Erected by what is known as a building group, the houses draw on local building traditions. The architects used typical elements of Alpine houses such as shallow pitched roofs and, at the gable ends, loggias under widely projecting roofs. Two house types of different widths arranged in shorter and longer rows enclose an elongated communal garden laid out above the underground garage. To the south a hotel closes the district off from the main road.
