Following the Rolex Learning Center and the Swiss Convention Center the ArtLab is the most recent building in the comprehensive plans to expand and increase the density of the elite Polytechnique Federale in Lausanne. Roofed in anthracite coloured slate, the building, which extends along a length of 235 m, is a link and a meeting place in one – running from the central Esplanade Square down a gentle slope to the student dorms.

The building seems predestined for economical production in series. So as not to obstruct the view across Lake Geneva it tapers in plan from 16 m to just 5 m at Esplanade Square, which is at a higher level. The timber structure consists of 57 frames placed 3.8 m apart.
